Leaving Hungary

Tying loose ends instead of burning bridges

If you decide to leave Hungary, you should consider thefollowing before you actually leave.

Immigration
If you are leaving because your employment contract was terminated or it expired, your employer will, will notify the Immigration Office, who will cancel your residence permit. So, you will not have to anything but make sure you leave Hungary within the timeframe
allocated to you by law or the immigration decision.

If you have any immigration proceedings in progess, you should cancel your application, so the Immigration Office can formally terminate the procedure without bringing a decision on the merits of your case.

If you have a residence permitthat will not be expiring soon, you will need to notify the Immigration Office. You can send them a letter to cancel your residence permit through epapir.gov.hu and you will have to return your residence permit (by post) to the Immigration Office as well.

National Tax Office (NAV)
If you were employed in Hungary, youremployer will automatically notify the Tax Office of the termination.

If you leave Hungary but you will still have an income from Hungary (from renting out an apartment for example), you will still need to file a tax report each year.

If you are an individualentrepreneur (EV), you must terminate your EV-status through your Ügyfélkapu and file a final balance sheet to the National Tax Office and pay the remainder of your taxes.

Make sure you pay all theremaining taxes you may have, as any unpaid arrears will be considered public debt, which may make your future residence permit application in Hungary difficult and can be collected in other countries with the assistance of your future country of residence as well.

Public Social Security Funds
If you are leaving because you’re employment contract wasterminated or it expired, your employer will notify the Social Security Funds of this, and with the expiry of your residence permit your TAJ-card will automatically be cancelled.

If you are a student, and your student status has ended, theUniversity will contact the Immigration Office and the Public Social Security Fund, and your residence permit and your TAJ-card will automatically be cancelled.

If you are a business owner or an individual entrepreneur,and your business remains in Hungary, check in with your accountant to cancel your social security contributions and TAJ-card.

Make sure you pay all the remaining social securitycontributions you may have, as any unpaid arrears will be considered public debt, which may make your future residence permit application in Hungary
difficult and can be collected in other countries with the assistance of your future country of residence as well.

Private Insurance

If you have private health insurance, property insurance,etc. you must let the Private Insurance Company know through their client service that you want to terminate the insurance, because you are leaving Hungary.

Please note that if you do not notify them, and theyterminate your insurance contract due to non-payment of the insurance fee, you may incur high penalties.

Bank accounts

Depending on bank policy, you may need to close your bankaccount. For security reasons, you will have to do this in person in a bank.

Rental agreement

Unless your rental agreement has expired, you must terminateyour rental agreement with the owner or rental company before you leave, otherwise you will be expected to pay your rental fee until you formally terminate the contract. Notice periods are governed by your rental contract, which is usually 30 or 60 days.

Utilities and other service providers

If you have your property’s utilities in your name (insteadof the owner’s), or you have a phone or internet subscription, you should check your contract or contact their client service to inquiry about transfering or cancelling subscriptions. Otherwise service providers will continue to charge utility and
subscription fees, and impose penalties for any unpaid arrears.

Children’s schools

Schools and kindergartens need to be notified in advance sothat the necessary paperwork, exam certificates and school report cards can be issued.

Pets
Dogs have to be microchipped and vaccinated in Hungary,which is the main requirement for pet travel. The EU pet passport allowsdogs, cats and ferrets to freely cross borders within Europe. Only a licensed vet may issue the passport, and vaccinations should be kept current by the vet.
