  • The Standard Process

    Naturalisation

  • Living in Hungary as a Foreigner for at least 8 years

    A non-Hungarian citizen may be naturalized if:
    a) he or she has been residing in Hungary for 8 consecutive years on a permanent residence permit prior to the date of submission of the application;
    b) under Hungarian law he or she has a clean criminal record, and at the time of the assessment of the application there are no
    ongoing criminal proceedings against him or her before a Hungarian court;
    c) his or her livelihood and residence are assured in Hungary;
    d) his or her naturalization does not violate the public security and national security of the Republic of Hungary; and
    e) he or she provides proof that he or she has passed theexam in basic constitutional studies in Hungarian language, or that he or she
    is exempted therefrom.

    Living in Hungary as a Foreigner for at least 5 years

    A non-Hungarian citizen may be naturalized on preferential terms if he or she has been residing in Hungary for at least 5 consecutive years on a permanent residence permit prior to the date of submission of the application and
    b) under Hungarian law he or she has a clean criminal record, and at the time of the assessment of the application there are no ongoing criminal proceedings against him or her before a Hungarian court; and
    c) his or her livelihood and residence are assured inHungary; and
    d) his or her naturalization does not violate the public security and national security of Hungary; and
    e) he or she provides proof that he or she has passed the exam in basic constitutional studies in Hungarian language, or that he or she is exempted therefrom;
    provided that:
    a) he or she was born in the territory of Hungary;
    b) he or she established residence in Hungary beforereaching the legal age.

    Living in Hungary as a Foreigner for at least 3 years

    A non-Hungarian citizen may be naturalized on preferential terms if he or she has been residing in Hungary for at least 3 consecutive years on a permanent residence permit prior to the date of submission of his or her application and if
    b) under Hungarian law he or she has a clean criminal record, and at the time of the assessment of the application there are no ongoing criminal proceedings against him or her before a Hungarian court; and
    c) his or her livelihood and residence are assured in Hungary; and
    d) his or her naturalization does not violate the public security and national security of Hungary; and
    e) he or she provides proof that he or she has passed the exam in basic constitutional studies in Hungarian language, or that he or she is exempted therefrom;
    provided that:
    a) he or she has been living in a valid marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least 3 years, or his or her marriage has been terminated with the spouse’s death; or
    b) his or her minor child is a Hungarian citizen; or
    c) he or she was adopted by a Hungarian citizen, or
    d) he or she was recognized as a refugee by a Hungarian authority.

  • Hungarian descent

    In case a non Hungarian citizen
    a) whose ascendant was a Hungarian citizen, or
    b) who demonstrates the plausibility of his or her descentfrom Hungary and provides proof of his or her knowledge of the Hungarian
    language may – on his or her request – be naturalized on preferential terms,
    provided that
    b) under Hungarian law he or she has a clean criminalrecord, and at the time of the assessment of the application there are no
    ongoing criminal proceedings against him or her before a Hungarian court; and
    d) his or her naturalization does not violate the publicsecurity and national security of Hungary.

    Spouse of a Hungarian Citizen Not living in Hungary

    A non-Hungarian citizen may be naturalized on preferentialterms if he or she
    a) has been living for 10 years in a valid marriage with aperson who is a Hungarian citizen at the time of submitting the citizenship
    application, or
    b) has been living for 5 years in a valid marriage with aperson who is a Hungarian citizen at the time of submitting the application for
    citizenship, and has a child born to them,
    provided that
    b) under Hungarian law he or she has a clean criminalrecord, and at the time of the assessment of the application there are no
    ongoing criminal proceedings against him or her before a Hungarian court; and
    d) his or her naturalization does not violate the publicsecurity and national security of the Republic of Hungary; and
    c) proves his/her knowledge of Hungarian.

    Special Conditions for Minors

    The condition of continuous residence in Hungary for the legally required period of time may be waived in the case of a minor if his or her application for naturalization is submitted together with that of his or her parent or if his or her parent acquired Hungarian citizenship.
    A child of minor age who was adopted by a Hungarian citizenmay be naturalized irrespective of his or her residence.
